The launch is a spacious 30 degrees sloped area on top of the highest ridge. Access is by a dirt road mainly with 4x4. Normal Landings - on the beach. S00.47535, W 80.45325 Flying is uncomplicated but general air traffic rules between hang gliders need to be observed. Also high winds take off and landings skills are mandatory. No Airspace restrictions.
The tropical climate of the region results from the interaction of its cold ocean current called Humboldt and hot ocean current called El Niño. Flying season starts May and last until December. Due to windy period October and November can become chilly in the afternoons. Rest of the year is very warm and good flying days are scattered.

GENERAL RULES
Are the same for both categories, except for the radius and just one out and return for sport class, daily points are cumulative
• The pilots have to be previously registered and accepted
• Pilots registered and accepted know at is own risk are responsible.

WEATHER
While no one would be so foolish as to guarantee the weather for any hang gliding contest, the period scheduled for this meet should yield three straight days of outstanding flying conditions. The Jungle and sea area around CANOA is not affected by the high mountain weather which makes many mountain sites inconsistent. While a high mountain site could have a solid week of virtually unflyable conditions, it is unlikely that there will be even a single day at CANOA on which a safe, valid task cannot be called.

The history of hang gliding in ECUADOR dates back to the early 70's with pioneers as Tony Gittes and Eduardo Alvear in QUITO the capital City. It was in 1976 they both started to learn him self. At the same time they begun to teach to more enthusiatic friends and opened more takeoffs as the Picincha mountain with a 10000 ft asl take off in the ANDES. This place was used for more than 20 years. Then later the new generation began to discover new flying sites at sea level and in the Andes also.

How to get here

Canoa - Manabi- Ecuador

Best way to reach Canoa is to fly either to Guayaquil or Quito cities and arrange transportation with local pilots or rent a car and fit it to carry your glider. The travel to Canoa from both cities is around 5 to 6 hours.

If you need transportation, write us and we will organize it for you for a fee depending on your needs.

Manabí, Ecuador
CANOA Ecuador

Plane

Equador international airports are Quito www.aeropuertoquito.aero and Guayaquil www.tagsa.aero.

Bus

Every 30 minutes there is a bus connection for south with San Vicente, Bahia de Caraquez or Tosagua. From Bahia there are 4 busses daily that leave to Quito (two in the morning (6:30AM, 9AM) and two in the evening). There is a direct bus that goes from Quito to Canoa, it leaves at 11:30 PM from Quitumbe in the South of Quito. You arrive to Canoa between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning. The bus that leaves from Canoa to Quito leaves at 9:45 PM and arrives to Quito beteen 4:00 and 5:00 AM too. It is strongly recommended that you buy the tickets one day before you travel so you can make your ride as planned. Each ticket costs 11$.
If you're arriving from Guayaquil, take a quick taxi from the airport to the Terminal Terrestre bus station. From there, Reina del Camino, Cocatur, or Cooperativa offer a range of daily buses. Most go to Bahia/San Vicente and either take the bus or a 15-20 min taxi ($6-8) to Canoa. It's perfectly possible that a bus operator will switch you to a colectivo bus (versus a directo) in Portoviejo that will then pass through Canoa.

It takes about 6 hours to get to Canoa from Quito (376 km via highway 20).
