Flying site

The two most likely flying sites for us will be the Paeroas and Kaimais.

The Paeroas is 3000 feet high and takes a NW wind. XC flights can be achieved in almost any direction from there, but normally we head over the back into the Reporoa Valley.

Flying site

The two most likely flying sites for us will be the Paeroas and Kaimais.

The Paeroas is 3000 feet high and takes a NW wind. XC flights can be achieved in almost any direction from there, but normally we head over the back into the Reporoa Valley. The Paeroas take off is accessed via private land so it is essential to go with the convoy unless you are fully briefed on the protocols for this site. If we are flying the Paeroas then the meeting point is usually the corner of Ngapouri and Waikite Valley Roads, which is a 25 minutes drive from the Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park.

The Kaimais takes a SW, although it is lower (at 2450 feet) it is often possible to do longer ridge XC here. The nearest town is Matamata and, again, the protocol is complicated so you must go in the convoy unless you are fully briefed. There is a locked gate involved. Sadly, outside of our control, there is a fee of $10 for each pilot/day at the Kaimais in addition to the competition entry fee. If we are flying at the Kaimais then the meeting point is usually Ronnies Bakery in Matamata, which is just under an hour from the Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park.

If, by any chance, the wind insist on being E then we may need to go to Hickies Bluff. This is a fairly major 4x4 drive through thermal land and a strict briefing will be given in advance. The entrance to this farm is on the SH5, near Settler's Road.

Rotorua itself is a fun thermal resort town with lots of non flying activities like mountain biking and hot pool hopping.
Matamata has a Hobbity theme, for Lord of the Rings people if you are into that.

Otherwise, there are numerous motels and hotels in Rotorua.

How to get here

Best airport to fly to is Auckland, from there it is approximately a 3 hour drive to Rotorua.

Rotorua is a major tourist centre with excellent transport links to the major NZ cities and airports. Check out http://www.nakedbus.com/ for good deals on buses to Rotorua.

Flying sites are approx 40-60 mins drive from Rotorua and require 4WD vehicles for access to the take off. There will be some spare capacity in private vehicles but pilots are advised to contact the organisers if they need assistance with transport arrangements.

In order to keep entry fees down there is no official transport & retrieve service for the PG Open 2017, so pilots are encouraged to car-share where possible. If you will be arriving in Rotorua without your own transport and would like to be put in contact with local pilots please contact the organiser, grahamsurrey@gmail.com
