32 pilots were attending the Palu Nomoni XC competition when the 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit. Palu is close to the flying site of Matantimali in the north of Sulawesi, which offers access to a long mountain range of forest-covered hills – it's a renowned flying arena.
A hotel where a number of pilots were staying completely collapsed, killing many of those inside.
The deceased include pilots Petra Mandagi, Gleen Mononutu, Franky Kowaas, Ardi Kurniawan, Lee Dongjin, Fahmi Rizqi and Reza Kambey. At least three other pilots are severely injured, and many have experienced huge trauma from the event.
A five-metre high tsunami hit the town minutes later, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless, and at least 1,500 people dead across the region. It is a catastrophe and this fund raiser aims to show the local flying community our support from a worldwide collective of pilots.
This support drive is led by Brett Janaway aims to raise $60,000 to help the pilots, families, widows and children of the pilots killed in Palu, and also support injured and traumatized survivors.
The funds raised will go directly to the families of the deceased pilots - their most immediate relatives – to help them through the difficult weeks and months ahead. It will also be used to help injured and other affected pilots attending the competition to assist in their recovery, on a needs-based criteria.
