Finnish Aeronautical Association (FAA) and Jämin Riippuliitäjät (JR) welcomes you to the "2019 Finnish Open XC League - Round 3" competition at the Jämi airfield in Finland. Airfield is located in the middle of beautiful Finnish countryside surrounded by forested hills, lakes and agricultural fields. Terrain provides good thermal conditions and flatland XC flying throughout the season.

Event is part of the Finnish Open XC League 2019, consisting of a series of 3 separate weekend competitions, that will be held between May and August. Take off method will be towing and type of tasks will be "Elapsed time".

Flying site

Jämijärvi airfield (ICAO EFJM) is a cradle for General Aviation, where e.g. Finnish Gliding had its beginnings. Especially in the summer there is a lot of flying
activity at Jämi, parachuting, paragliding, gliding, aerobatic flying, jet model flying, and ultralight flying. The main summer event is Jämi Fly In in early July
There is also military aerial reconnaissance activity at Jämi. Jämi is about an hour´s drive from Tampere and Pori (approx. distance 75 km). From the Helsinki metropolitan area it´s about three hours drive to Jämi.
Nearest towns are Ikaalinen and Kankaanpää (25 km to Jämi). There are excellent facilities available at the airfield, including hotel and restaurant taht will be the competition headquarters.

Flying season is from May to September. Long midsummer days provide plenty of opportunities for XC flights and tasks up to 100 km. Cloud base in summer is typically 1500-2200m. Midday conditions in the summer can be sometimes strong.
Generally the thermal strength is in range on 4-6 m/s. Thermals start developing around 10 a.m. being strongest around the midday. At summer time one can expect to find light lift even as late as 7 p.m.

Take-off method is towing. Towing direction depends on the prevailing winds. Surface at take off is gravel.

Selection and entry fee

Registration opens May 30.th 2019. Selection criteria for places 1-10 on world pilot ranking scheme. The rest of the places according the time of registration.

Each Round/event has got its own sub-page.

This page is for the Round 3, Jämi: First selection to the competition will be made 6th June. The organizer will send e-mail to the selected pilots on 6th June containing message "To pay". The payment of 70 euro must be in the Clubs account by June the 15th.

The fee will be returned if the pilot is not accepted by the organization.
7 places reserved for foreign pilots will be released July 8.th and places will be filled up in the order of registration - payment deadline is July 18.th.

After this deadline the post registration payment will be 90 euro.
If the event is cancelled the pilots will receive a refund of 50 euros.

Prize fund and scoring categories

Finnish open; Finnish open female; Sports class (EN-C or lower class); Sports Class Female.

The FAA and the Paragliding and Hang Gliding Committee will issue medals to the above categories.

Hang gliding ranking competition is running at the same time, but the HG pilots have lower priority in the start queue.

10-10:45 The post registration at the Jämi Airport is possible, 80 euro. Check of license and FAI-Sporting license of all pilots.
11:00 Official Registration and equipment inspection
11:30 First Briefing, mandatory safety briefing for all.
- After task setting transport to towing paddock, where towing start immediately, ordered start begins 12:30. First day order according to wprs and time of registration for those without wprs points. Second and third day the order is according to the result list, when applicable. Start box in use.

August 3rd and 4th Saturday and Sunday
Contest flying days.

August 4th
ca 19:30 - Prize-giving and closing ceremony - estimated time to be verified at competition blog-page at 18:00.

Accommodation and Activities

HQ is the PG-HG clubhouse technical building bottom floor.
Available beds in the Airport Hotel Reima Country Center 80€ a two person night and 90€ a three person night. Camping tent 5€ and Caravaning 15€ (electric socket) near HQ.

Plane

Most international flights land at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport, which is located in Vantaa, 18 kilometers to the north of the central Helsinki. Jämijärvi is a local airport itself. If you cannot find any cofmortable local flight you can fly to Pori (POR) airport and drive 75 km from there.

Car

It takes about 3 hours to get to Jämijärvi by car from Helsinki via E18 highway - 248 km.
