Flying site

Canungra is a famous Australian free flying area of Gold Coast region. There are several take offs for all wind directions located on 500 m high tree-covered mountain ridges. The area is about 30 km from the East coast of the continent so the sea breeze can intervene in the afternoon and produce some very buoyant conditions.

Event info

Welcome to Canungra Spandi-Cup, a week of XC task racing with full retrieve in the peak Canungra spring season. With a focus on glider size classes it is a Handicap event to create a level playing field for all pilots. Also included is a full retrieve service, and a number of included social events.

Spandicup tasks will use turnpoints with multiple radius turnpoint cylinders based on glider span to facilitate an overall handicap race and score.

A full minibus retrieve is incorporated into the comp which gives all pilots launch access from HQ and retrieve from flying each day back to HQ. This also allows for airport pickups for interstate and international pilots who are flying in at select times (Sat 28th only). contact us to coordinate this

Presentation dinner on Saturday Evening. Prizes include overall and day prizes awarded each day for a host of categories. Also includes XC maps, Launch priority and safety oversight for competition pilots. Several included social events during the week will make for a fun and social week long event.

The area is about 30 km from the East coast of the continent so the sea breeze can intervene in the afternoon and produce some very buoyant conditions. All take offs are grass covered and well maintained.
The Beechmont launch during the dry summer months can produce early thermals even at 7 am. This results in long XC flights. The records are 325 km for a paraglider and 519 km for a hang glider. All Canungra take offs are about 15-20 min from the town.
