Event info

Finnish Aeronatical Club (FAA) and Southern Finland Paragliding Club (ESV) welcome you to the 2014 Paragliding Finnish Open at Kiikala airfield in Finland. Airfield is located in the middle of beautiful Finnish countryside surrounded by forests, lakes and fields. Terrain provides good thermal conditions and pleasant flatland XC flying during the long summer days. This is the first time when Paragliding Finnish Open will be organized in Kiikala, but the nearby airfield of Räyskälä is famous for its successful gliding competitions including the 33rd World Gliding Championships that will be organized in June 2014 just before the 2014 Paragliding Finnish Open.

Flying site

Kiikala airfield (ICAO EFIK) is in south-western Finland, about 100 km west from capital city of Helsinki. Nearest large town is town of Salo that is about 40km west from the airfield. Kiikala airfield is the home base of the Southern Finland Paragliding Club. In addition to paragliders there are also sail planes and ultra lights operating from there. Elevation of the area is only about 100 meters MSL. There are no hills whatsoever, so the good flatland XC flying skills are essential. Take-off method is towing. All pilots are expected to master tow launches. There are paved runways 18/36 ja 10/28.
Main runway 18/36 is officially 930 meters long but there is 1350 meters in use for paraglider towing. Runway 10/28 is only 600 m long and it will be used only in case of side wind.
There is a club house at the airfield, but the facilities are fairly limited. Club house will be used as the event head quarters. There is WiFi available in the club house, though.
Mobile phone network coverage is also pretty good.

Flying season is from May to September. Long midsummer days provide plenty of opportunities for XC flights and tasks up to 100 km. Cloud base in summer is typically 1500-2200m. From July to August there is an increased risk of overdeveloping clouds. Terrain at the airfield is usually very dry, which may induce some dust devils from time to time. Midday conditions in the summer can be sometimes strong. Generally the thermal strength is in range on 4-6 m/s.
Thermals start developing around 10 a.m. being strongest around the midday. At summer time one can expect to find light lift even as late as 7 p.m.
