Event info
Flymaster XC Challenge welcomes you to the beautiful Southern French Alps in Laragne-Monteglin, where you can fly over amazing landscapes under 300 days of sunshine each year. Whether you’re an experienced competition pilot or taking your first steps into the world of comps, this event is for you.
Laragne-Chabre is famous for its reliable weather, especially in June when long days and consistently nice and strong conditions create an ideal playground for cross-country flying.
Chabre will be our primary launch, but if the wind happens to shift to the north, we’ll simply head to a nearby site—Montclar—ensuring you never lose a day of flying. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, our team will arrange trips to the Via Ferrata at La Motte du Caire (one of the most stunning in France), the historic town of Sisteron, the Gorges de la Méouge, or the nearby lakes, so you’ll never run out of activities.
As the name suggests, the Flymaster XC Challenge is presented in partnership with Flymaster. Their involvement makes the rewards even sweeter: not only will the overall winner take home a new Flymaster instrument, but everyone has a shot at winning great gear in our prize raffle. During the event, we will also use the latest Flymaster tracking devices to monitor every pilot’s location with enhance Live Tracking.
Safety is our top priority. Tasks are designed to be engaging yet secure, guided by our Safety Director, Karlis Jaunpetrovics, who has lived here since 2018, knows every turn in the valley, and has set a few impressive records at Chabre. Working alongside him is Jacques, our meteorologist with over 45 years of experience in weather forecasting. Together, they use their in-depth local knowledge to plan the best possible tasks each day. To prepare for the competition, consult Karlis’s free PDF guide or dive into his published works at Flying Karlis Shop. If you’re participating in the comp, you’ll receive a discount code for the book, which contains valuable information on the Chabre region.
We’re also thrilled to have Jessica Love as your Meet Director. A paraglider pilot with more than 20 years of flying experience and currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Portsmouth, Jessica will bring knowledge and passion to the competition.
Jessica will work with Karlis to lead the daily task briefings on takeoff. For those looking to push their flying further, we’ll also host special debrief sessions after every task, giving you the chance to analyze your performance, pinpoint mistakes, and come back stronger the next day.
During the competition, retrieves and logistics are handled by Cecile and Ellen, local experts who have been organizing events here for years. Their familiarity with every road and shortcut ensures you won’t wait long to get back to HQ. They’ll also welcome you with your competition T-shirt and a free drink to kick off the week in the best way possible. Let’s not forget our amazing drivers, who are just as knowledgeable and eager to whisk you safely and quickly from any landing field back to HQ. They’ll even deliver cold soft drinks and beer to the pilots who make goal, so you can celebrate each successful task.
Talking about HQ, it will be at Camping La Monteglin in Laragne. The campsite is perfect for hosting paragliding events, starting with a massive landing zone right in the middle of the campsite—when the weather allows it, our goal will be set up here. There is a large gathering area for briefings and debriefs, a bar with an amazing barman for a refreshing drink, a kitchen offering breakfasts and dinners, and very fast internet. Best of all, it’s within walking distance of all the amenities you might need during your stay. You’ll find a wide range of accommodation options, from pitching your tent or parking your campervan or caravan, to staying in comfortable mobile homes (with or without AC).
At the heart of it all is a dedicated team committed to creating an atmosphere of fun, safety, and personal challenge. You’ll sharpen your flying skills and enjoy the team’s hospitality in a region that offers endless opportunities for cross-country achievements and great off-day activities. Join us at the Flymaster XC Challenge—we can’t wait to see you on launch, and at goal.
