Event info

Wings over Woodrat is a low-pressure, high fun event focused on learning to fly cross-country by utilizing competition formats. If you have ever wanted to learn how the top cross-country pilots navigate the sky, this is for you. We will utilize a three-day competition in order to create a structure for learning about what it takes to increase competency around cross-country flying. The event will also host numerous manufacturers and schools for a trade show. Finally, the event will be capped off with a one-day fun fly-in where costumes are highly encouraged and a solid round of lectures around tantalizing topics.

Russ Ogden and Nick Greece will lead morning and nightly sessions on all subjects around flying at your highest level, competition or otherwise. Other mentors will lead a variety of deep dives on relevant topics to improve both competitive and free-flying.

Wings over Woodrat will provide rides to launch and retrieve so that you can focus on what is important - having fun, learning, risk mitigation, and flying safely.

Flying site

Woodrat mountain is located in Southern Oregon and has been home to many US national events. The surrounding valleys and complex weather patterns are excellent training grounds for understanding lift patterns.

Woodrat has tremendously consistent flying. Expect a plentiful lift and changing weather. Flying can be complex and intriguing. Proper decision-making results in 60-160 km straight line and FAI triangle flights.

Woodrat sits above the Applegate Valley, home to numerous wineries, lodges and the Applegate river, with plentiful activities for non-flying partners. We chose not to sanction the event this year so that we could determine goals in advance. This allows for improved spectator experiences. Our primary LZ is Longsword Winery where spectators can enjoy a glass of wine as they wait for you to land.

Flying Woodrat in the summer requires good bump tolerance and a P3 rating. Glass offs are consistent, gentle and last until after the sun sets.
