Flying site

The X-Lakes Challenge is a hike and fly event, where you create your own adventure in the fells of the Lake District.

The X Lakes two day challenge encourages you to create your own adventure in the Fells of the English Lake District (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). With open fell tops and wide valley bottoms it is an ideal arena for hike and fly. The challenge involves ‘bagging’ some set-task Wainwrights in the vicinity either by foot or paraglider. You can extend your score by strategically bagging further Wainwrights on route.

The two day challenge is an approximately 23-hour event. Timings will be confirmed by the Task Committee during the Thursday evening briefing, but competitors should plan to start from 08:00 Friday and fly/hike until 16:00 on Saturday, resting at 22:00 on Friday night and re-starting at 07:00 on Saturday morning. The start and finish location are defined but the route and flying choices are entirely the choice of the participant.

Selection and entry fee

The X-Lakes Entry Process

All XC competitors require a PILOT RATING, meaning you must have passed your BHPA pilot rating or have the International Pilot Proficiency Information (IPPI) level 4 before 18 June 2025 to take part. ENSURE you answer the poll question on the registration page for the pilot rating.

PLEASE NOTE: To ensure we have some degree of control who competes in the challenge we would like pilots without multi day competitive experience to fill out the X-Lake vetting form. ENSURE you answer the poll question on the registration page and complete and return the vetting form (if required) asap, this will help us process your entry quickly and efficiently. The vetting form link is in the next paragraph below.

A maximum of 40 places are available for the X-Lakes two day challenge.
If they apply, the previous year's top ten (as per results listed on the website) will be automatically offered an option for a place to compete in the two day challenge. The three top-placed competitors in the previous year’s one day challenge will also be offered an option to participate in the two day challenge if they want to take part.

The remaining places in the two day challenge will then be awarded on the basis of when they registered, remember if you snooze you loose. The organisers will reserve some places as wildcard positions to be awarded at their discretion. If successful, entrants will be invited to make their charitable donation. If the payment is not received within two weeks of acceptance your place will be given to the first competitor on the waiting list.

Please don’t try to register for any of the other LLC events to edge your chances of success.

Both events will proceed regardless of the weather.

Prize fund and scoring categories

Entrants will carry trackers and a live leader board will collate the scoring. We aim to conclude the scoring of the two-day event by 18:00 on the Saturday. Prize-giving will follow, pilots are invited for a meal which is included in your entry.

The two day challenge awards a trophy for the overall highest score. Based on returning to the finish, and signing the athlete's two day challenge sign inboard and accruing the highest score of Wainwright's bagged. We will be awarding a prize to the highest scoring male and female competitors.

A trophy is awarded to the highest scoring competitor in the Vol-Biv Challenge.

A ‘Jo-median’ trophy will also be provided for the person coming in the mid-field position in the two day challenge to recognise the value of simply taking part in the X-Lakes challenge!

In the event of a tie the winner is the competitor with the most Wainwrights. If it's still tied the winner is the first competitor to return to the show-ground and sign the athletes two day challenge sign inboard.
