Event info

This will be the first Hang Gliding competition of the Australian calendar and will be an 8-day, FAI Category 2, HGFA AAA Sanctioned competition (subject to approval). It will be an important competition for those who are wanting to qualify for points towards the Aussie ladder / Team Selection and WPRS points. It will also be an opportunity for aspiring competition pilots to fly with Australia and New Zealand’s best pilots. Overseas pilots are most welcome and will be rewarded with the opportunity of flying one of Australia’s challenging and premier hang gliding sites.

The focus of the competition this year will again be to encourage Novice pilots to embrace the values of competition flying by introducing them to the principles and strategies needed to compete, by offering achievable tasks, and to be supported by other, more experienced competition pilots to the skills of flying one of the most challenging and rewarding places to fly in Australia.

Headquarters this year will be at the Canungra Hotel or the Canungra RSL (tba). Practice Day: Friday 19 October. Entry fee: $300 (plus $30 site fee for non-club members).

Flying site

Canungra is a famous Australian free flying area of Gold Coast region. There are several take offs for all wind directions located on 500 m high tree-covered mountain ridges. The area is about 30 km from the East coast of the continent so the sea breeze can intervene in the afternoon and produce some very buoyant conditions. All take offs are grass covered and well maintained.
The Beechmont launch during the dry summer months can produce early thermals even at 7 am. This results in long XC flights. The records are 325 km for a paraglider and 519 km for a hang glider. All Canungra take offs are about 15-20 min from the town.
Complete flying site guide at http://chgc.asn.au/Launch-Sites/

Take off Beechmont -28.1192, 153.2010 530 m ASL.
NE, E, SE.
Beechmont Launch, known as Rosin's Lookout, over-looks the stunning Numinbah Valley. The area has remained largely undeveloped in recent decades. To the east is the Springbrook plateau. On the eastern side of the valley is the Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park and to the west lies the Lamington Plateau and the Lamington National Park. To the south is the Tweed Valley. The site is flyable most afternoons during summer. Power lines go from the left (North) of the launch down to the valley. They are clearly visible on one of the pictures of the launch.
The Launch is adjacent to a peaceful picnic area, with dedicated electric BBQ facilities, toilets and undercover seating area. Open to all pilots, as well as the public, it is often an area families come to enjoy a picnic while watching the hang gliders and paragliders fly above them.

Take off Mt Tamborine -27.9504, 153.1810, 534 m ASL.
SW, W, NW.
Sealed road to the site along Main Western Rd Mt. Tamborine. Tamborine Mountain Launch overlooks the beautiful Canungra Valley and is approximately 30km from the Gold Coast and 70km from Brisbane. With it's breath-taking views and scenery, it's clean mountain air and local art shops, quaint coffee shops and restaurants, and with it's country markets and friendly atmosphere, it is a popular site any weekend for pilots and spectators.

Hinchcliff launch -28.0695, 153.1470, 490 m ASL.
SE, S
A good road leading almost on the take off with short walking distance after. Hinchcliffe's Launch is on the ridge running parallel to Beechmont further inland (West) from the coast. Known as Hinchies, it is often flown when the wind strength is too strong to fly from Beechmont. As it is a few Kms inland from the coast, it is a good site to go XC! Private road access is through a locked gate (conditions apply to obtain the key).
Hinchies bombout is open to spectators awhens it is on a public road, however the Launch area is only open to members. Access to the site is only possible by obtaining the electronic gate opener from John Hinchcliffe. Please car pool by leaving vehicles at the bottom of Toe Holt Road but be mindful of not blocking driveways or access easements. Before driving up beyond he locked gate, a text message must be sent to the landowner at the top of the mountain (Kevin) saying that you will be using the road.
When parking vehicles at the Hinchies Bombout, please park as far off the road as possible. Be careful when doing a U turn at the bombout as that part of the road is a crest and passing vehicles may not see you until it’s too late.
The owner of the site (John Hinchcliffe) is hugely supportive of the CHGC but history of difficulties with neighbouring land owners makes this site very sensitive. Please bear this in mind when flying this site.

Flying Fox launch -28.1453, 153.1489, 570m ASL
N, NE
Dirt road all the way to take off. Flying Fox is regarded by many as the hidden gem of SE QLD flying sites. The site is nestled on the northern boundary of the Lamington National Park and has a reputation for “turning it on” for those lucky enough to be there on the right day. Spectacular “glass-off” flights, seabreeze convergences and great mid winter thermic flying when no other site is working.
Flying Fox is strictly open “by appointment” only (prior notification to the landowner is mandatory) - please read event info to learn of it is used for the event.

How to get here

Canungra is a small country town nestled in a quiet valley behind the Gold Coast and surrounded by tree-covered ridges separating wide flat valleys. The location provides the environment for varied and challenging flying as well as plenty of alternative activities should the weather fail to co-operate. The town has most of the essential facilities necessary for survival of today's pilots. There is a pub, post-office, supermarket, a few cafe's, a chemist and one ATM. The launches are 15-20 minutes drive from the town centre.
Canungra is situated about 40 minutes drive from the Gold Coast just over an hour from Brisbane in the SE corner of Queensland. There are scheduled international domestic flights into Brisbane and Coolangatta airports. If driving from the south on the coast road, stay on the Pacific Highway until you reach Nerang and then follow the signs to Beaudesert/Canungra. If coming on one of the inland routes, stay on Cunningham's Highway until you cross the Great Dividing Range and then follow the signs for Boonah, Beaudesert and finally Canungra.
