How Good Is Forbes!
The new year 2019 welcomes the 13th consecutive Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Competition! Watch the competition live as international pilots race to goal in one of the world's best hang gliding competitions. This year we have over 70 registered pilots who have come to Forbes from all around the world. Forbes is known for big air and big distances; a hang glider pilot's dream!
Please visit the home page for all the information!
www.forbesflatlands.com
Forbes offers some of the most consistent hang gliding weather in the world. Smooth fat thermals, high cloudbase (up to 14,000feet) and hundreds of kilometres of uninterrupted terrain means that pilots are virtually guaranteed a non-stop competition. The past 4 years have seen the pilots fly a total of over 4600km with an average of 25-45 airtime per competition! Last year the organisers set the longest task ever in Forbes – 310km to Hay – the conditions that day were so good that almost half of the pilots flew the full distance!
In addition, of course there's the abundance of harvested fields for landing. We are very fortunate to have friendly farmers who are supportive of the competition and often lend a helping hand, a drink or food to weary pilots! One lovely famer last year even apologised for the overgrown weeds in her field!

Accommodation and Activities
orbes offers a good variety of accommodation - check www.forbes-nsw.com/Accommodation.html for a listing. In general, motels are at the higher end of price and comfort. They offer air-conditioned rooms, usually with small refrigerators, and some have swimming pools. Hotels (pubs) are generally older, with smaller rooms that are not necessarily air-conditioned and may have shared bathrooms. Hotels usually include a basic breakfast and are usually budget-priced. There are several caravan parks in Forbes, all with self-catering cabins as well as tent and caravan sites. It's worth searching the Internet for information and reviews about individual motels and hotels.
In addition, some houses may be available for rent during the competition. You can register your interest in renting a house by emailing fly@forbesflatlands.com.
Houses are limited in availability, and terms must be negotiated between your team and the owner. Pricing on houses usually starts at AUD$35 - $50 per person per night.
How to get here
We recommend that you fly into Sydney and drive to Forbes (see Car Rental below).
Although there are commercial flights from Sydney to nearby Parkes Regional Airport, they are on small turbo-prop planes with severe baggage restrictions. For information and reservations, contact REX (Regional Express) at www.rex.com.au. Parkes is approximately 40 kilometres from Forbes.
CountryLink operates rail services from Sydney to Lithgow and Orange with a connecting coach (bus) to Forbes, as well as direct coach service from Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Check www.countrylink.info/timetables for details.
