Event info

Georgia-Ukraine Friendship Open Cup – the first category FAI2 international competitions to be held in in Georgia: the event -– cross-country flights. The unique location of Kakheti allows round-trip flights of 100+ km.

Flying site

The Greater Caucasus Mountains (altitude 3000–3300 m, length 90 km) shelter the valley from all wind.
The thermal wind formed by the Alazani Valley (90 x 30 km) is always more dominant than other winds, resulting in unique calm conditions being formed in the mountains. High sunshine duration here together with a lack of rain and wind create ideal conditions for paragliding. The mountain slopes are completely covered with forest, which greatly smoothes the flows and means the turbulence here is moderate. . In summer severe inversions occur in the valley, making it difficult to ascend to the cloud base.In the summer the valley is subject to an acute temperature inversion, and this sometimes means the base is engulfed in cloud. This problem is solved at the upper start, which is above the inversion layer. The large valley in front of the mountains provides a safe landing place in the event of a thunderstorm or other adverse conditions. A well-developed network of pick-up routes and friendly local inhabitants complete the picture of an ideal flight location.

Upper start (Goloyani) - 1650 m, 41°57’16.69″N 46°04’30.25″E. Drop to landing point - 1250 m. Large start point for 10+ simultaneously starting gliders. After starting, the pilot enters the forest zone. Before landing, the pilot must fly 5 km along the ridge. Due to the lack of background prevailing winds, there is no problem conducting a safe flight before landing, although it is recommended to fly 2 km along the ridge to reach the front part of it. The road to the start takes 30-50 minutes, and is navigable by 4WD vehicles.
