Flying site

The flying site is situated on the north of Portugal with high mountains and open valleys, surrounded by vast plains to several directions, the place is a perfect and secure for cross-country flights. Especially good, for local triangulations up to 100km as demonstrated in the last World Cup events.

The Portuguese Paragliding Championship 2021 - Montalegre, Is organized according the rules of FAI category 2 competitions and will take place in Montalegre - Portugal, from 11 to 17 of July 2021. Montalegre and its surrounding region, has a long tradition of holding top level International Competitions, namely the FAI World Paragliding Championship in 2003, FAI European Paragliding Championship 2018 and several Paragliding World Cup competitions.


FPVL, DNA and the Montalegre municipality welcome all the pilots and all teams,
and wish to all a pleasant stay and good flying experience.

Flying site

The flying site is situated on the north of Portugal with high mountains and open valleys, surrounded by vast plains to several directions, the place is a perfect and secure for cross-country flights. Especially good, for local triangulations up to 100km as demonstrated in the last World Cup events.

The cross-country flying season starts in May and lasts until beginning of September. From June to August, climbing over 3000 meters and reaching distances larger than 150 km is a frequent achievement.There is a wide range of possibilities for task setting. Depending of the weather conditions, the tasks can consist on triangulations held in the range of the Mountain, or expand into the adjacent flat lands, with legs to several directions.

The area is in general easy to fly. There are no remarkable dangerous places, the visibility is good and the obstacles are normally clearly noticed. Generally there are no forbidden places, to fly over or landing. Although the organization go seek for authorization from the owners of fields chosen to be used as goals, by norm any fields with no agricultural plants, can be used for landing. There are no records of any adverse reaction from the owners of fields used for unplanned landing. The exception to these, are a couple of aerodromes located on the area, that pilots should avoid to fly over or cross the approach lines to land and takeoff.

Serra do Larouco
South (N41° 52.78' W007° 43.25')
Access: Asphalt road from HQ and from official landing field to the Take-Off.
Total time from HQ to take-off: between 15 to 20 min.
Altitude: 1525m AMSL
Height above valley: 520m
Size of take-off area: Very large Take off with grass, suitable for several gliders at once.
Surface: Natural Grass
Orientation: Southeast
Wind Flight conditions: Take off is possible with any wind direction, for wind speeds under 10km/h.
Landing: Plain field on the valley, near the village Gralhas (N41° 51.4' W007º 42.6')


Alternative take off:
Serra do Larouco
North (N41° 55' W007° 43')
Access: Asphalt road from HQ and from official landing field, to Serra do Larouco and dirt road about 2 km.
Altitude: 1250m AMSL
Height above valley: 430m
Size of take-off area: 2 Large Take-Offs, with Grass, suitable for several gliders at once.
Surface: Natural Grass
Orientation: Northwest, North
Wind flight conditions: From Northeast to Northwest (a round shape hill top makes possible take off with all these wind components).
Landing: Plain field very large with several fields around (N41º 56' W007º 43').


Alternative take off:
Serra do Larouco
West (N41º 53.1'; W007º 43.55')
Access: Asphalt road from HQ and landing area to take-off.
Total time from HQ to take-off: between 15 to 20 min.
Altitude: 1500 AMSL
Height above valley: 350m
Size of take-off area: Large Take-Off suitable for several gliders at once.
Surface: Natural Grass.
Orientation: West.
Wind Flight conditions: From West-Southwest to West-Northwest
Landing: Plain field near the road on the valley (N41° 53.1'; W 007° 44.5').

Selection and entry fee

240€ - This value includes the optional retrieval and overall transportation provided by the organization.
Pilots opting-out to this service will pay a reduced fee of 135€.


After the pre-registration date, the selected pilots receive an email with information to make the payment and the payment term to confirm the registration.

The email will be sent based on the following parameters:

50 places for Portuguese pilots according to the national ranking on December 31, 2020, 40 places for non-national pilots according to the ranking on December 31, 2020 and 10 wild cards for the organization.

To avoid misunderstandings, you should check the status of your registration on the race website Airtribune ore www.landfor.pt, where three states can be checked:

• Registered - Pre-registration carried out
• Waiting for payment - Payment details of the registration fee have been sent to you. If you didn't receive the email, check the spam, or get in touch with the organization to solve the problem.
• Confirmed - The registration fee has been received and your registration is confirmed.

REQUIREMENTS

As a Portuguese Open type of competition registration is ruled by the provisions of paragraphs 2.7 and 2.9 of the FPVL Competition Rules.

• Proof of insurance for non FPVL pilots with the following coverages:

Personal accidents:

• Death: 28.500 EUR
• Permanent disability: 28.500 EUR
• Treatment and Repatriation: 5.000 EUR
• Funeral expenses: 2.280 EUR

Third-party liability:

• 150.500 EUR
• Disclaimer of liability of the organization on the event of any type of accident or incident during the competition
(Declaration to be filled available at the Head).
• Serial number and model of pilot’s GPS.

REGISTRATION WILL BE CONSIDERED AS VALID ONLY AFTER PAYMENT

Documents required at registration

  • The FAI IPPI card is an International card that states your skill level. It is issued by your National Association and matches the level or your flying Licence

  • You will need to provide photo ID on arrival. This could be Passport, Driving Licence or National ID, for example.

Cancellation Policy

Refund policy:

Cancellation by the organization for reasons beyond its control:

• In case of cancellation of the event within 10 days of the start of the event, the registration fee will be refunded with less € 30, which will be used to cover part of the costs with the organization.
• In case of cancellation of the race in a period exceeding 10 days of the start of the race, return shall be the registration fee less 10 € which will be used to cover part of the costs to the organization.

Pilot cancellation

• Any cancellation by the pilot, after payment and up to 15 days before the start of the race, will cost 60 € of the registration fee.
• In case of cancellation by the pilot during the 15 days prior to the start of the race, there will be a cost of 50% of the registration fee.

Notification of cancellation should be by email to the organisers at eventos@landfor.pt. The cancellation date shall be taken as the date of receipt of the email. The entry fee payment is not transferable to another pilot in the event of cancellation.
