Clopotiva is part of the Retezat National Park (http://retezat.ro), one of the highest and most beautiful mountain ranges in Romania. The highest peak is Peleaga, altitude 2509 meters. It's a peak that can be reached fairly easy, crossing from Pelegii meadow. On the way you will pass Bucura lake (the largest glacial lake in Romania, with a surface of almost 90 000 square meters) which can be admired in all its splendor from the top of Peleaga's 2509 meters.

The Retezat mountains are part of the Souterns Carpathians, located in the Retezat-Godeanu mountain chain. They rise between two major valleys, Petrosani and Hateg and lay between two major rivers, Raul Mare which it borders to the north and east and Jiul de Vest which it borders to the south. They are surrounded by the Tarcu mountains to the west, the Godeanu mountains to the south-west and Valcan mountains to the south.

The nearest town close to Clopotiva is Hateg, located in the Hateg valley, which is well suited for flatland flying when it’s overdevelopment in the mountains or a very low cloudbase. Good flying place both for beginners and for more advanced pilots who want to fly over the most beautiful natural reservations in Romania. Beautiful flights were made at Clopotiva, over the mountain or in the plains, on the shoulder of ridges descending from the main ridge.

Heading towards prePWC!

So SXC is done, after 5 days we are happy! It’s crazy May and we managed to have 3 tasks out of 4 days, and 2 were valid. And actually it was pretty good, pilots got together and had good time, flying was also good for most of them. Nature in this part of the country is beautiful but the rain we had before made it spectacular, everything was green and you could still see the snow on the crest of the mountain. After first training day when everyone made several hours of flying with cloudbase around 1800 meters we had a dark day with many clouds threatening to rain, but we were lucky to have an opening of 2 hours to fly, still, the elapsed time task was stopped and cancelled because of some raindrops over the takeoff, and then on the third day we had first valid task, with generous clouds and decent thermals, cloudbase started at 1500 meters and later in the day grew up to 2200 meters high. Again some pilots flew for 4 hours and a half. On the fourth day the wind was blowing strong from aside so we had to cancel the day, people just went into the mountains. Retezat is a natural reserve park and there are plenty of stuff to see in the area. Last day was promising and indeed it was good, cloudbase over 2500 meters with climbs over 6 m/sec, pilots enjoyed the high view over the mountain in the back. At the end we have seen happy faces, most pilots had a very good competition, exchanging knowledge and interacting to each other in their culture. So, we think SXC was a success, that’s why we decided to make a prePWC here next year from 8-14 June 2015. Watch SkyTribe video about the event! Feel the spirit :) http://youtu.be/341oMEdR08g
