Event info

We're looking forward to another spectacular NZ Hang Gliding national competition for 2022. Everyone who attended last year will agree that 2021 was our best year yet in Murchison, clocking up 10 days of flying in great conditions. Again using the secret sauce we have chose these specific dates and we're hoping for a repeat week of back to back flying.

Flying site

The main site for the Nationals is Mt Murchison. 360 degrees of take off, high mountain site, situated bang smack in the middle between the West and East Coasts. Easy landings right at the foot of the mountain and lots of good landings in the area we fly in. The other sites up our sleeves are Sherry River, Tapawera, Inwoods, and a few others if required.

Selection and entry fee

There is no selection requirement.

The main focus of the week will be to facilitate the Nationals Open Class for Intermediate and Advanced pilots. In conjunction with this we will also run a Sport Class for king-posted gliders. Novice pilots are welcome to attend and fly when conditions permit (and are within the parameters of their rating).

This year we would like people to pay competition fees prior to the event.
Please note the cancellation policy as well.
The fee will be charged as follows.
- The competition fee is $200 if fully paid before 22nd of December 2021.
- The competition fee is $220 if paid after the 22nd of December 2021.

The fee can be deposited in the account below or paid at the event during registration.
Bank Account: 02-0600-0020697-067. Put your own name in the 'Particulars' field, and your PIN (Pilot Identification Number) in the 'Reference' field. You will be sent a receipt.

In order to register for the 2022 Nationals, please:
- Register for the event through Air Tribune.
- Follow the Instructions that come in your event registration confirmation email.

Documents required at registration

  • Issued by your local NAC on behalf of the FAI. You cannot normally compete in an FAI event without one. Contact your National Association (NAC)

    FAI Sporting Licence

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation Policy:
With the uncertainty surrounding Covid the following policy will be adhered to:
90% refund for pilot withdrawal or event cancellation before the 22nd December 2021
80% refund for pilot withdrawal or event cancellation after the 22nd December 2021
This ensures that outlaid costs are met as we get closer to the event. Any surplus will go towards the worlds team fund.

Accommodation and Activities

Accommodation: Linda & Robin Sanford Riverside Holiday Park Murchison 0800 523 9591 or +64 27 756 9016 or +64 27 667 3012 19 Riverview Road 7077 PO Box 140 Murchison 7049 NZ www.riversidemurchison.co.nz . Go here to book your accommodation. This place is amazing! It's located right beside the Buller river. Linda and Robin have kindly allocated us full and exclusive use of the open air dining and lounge facility which comes complete with its own kitchen and toilets including plates, knives, pots, pans etc so travel light as everything you need is there. Camping sites are $12.50 per night, and cabins are $30 per night. Camping sites can probably be booked on arrival however if you want to make sure just book ahead of time. If you want a cabin it would definitely pay to BOOK NOW as there is a popular country music concert happening 27-30 Jan 22 and they stay at the Riverside Holiday Park too. We can't speak highly enough of Riverside Holiday Park. It is extremely clean and just such good value for money, and so well positioned in terms of its proximity to the river, town, flying etc.

How to get here

Murchison is roughly 3h 40min inland from Christchurch via SH7 (290km) or 2h 17m from Picton via Blenheim SH63.
