Flying site

The Owens Valley Cross Country Classic 2015 will be held in the White Mountains of the Owens Valley.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains form the west side of the Owens Valley and the White-Inyo Mountains the east.
The White Mountains are about 60 miles long and rise 10,000 feet above the floor of the northern Owens Valley. The highest point on the Whites is White Mountain Peak at 14,252 ft (4,344 m).

The Owens Valley is the birthplace of foot-launched cross country flying.
The first 100 mile hang glider flight was here in 1976. Most of the early foot-launched cross country records were set in the Owens Valley.
The first Owens Valley Cross Country (Hang Gliding) Classic was held in 1978.
The Owens Valley Cross Country Classic was the first ever foot-launched cross country contest and set the standard for years to come.
Since that time the Owens has been the site of many foot-launched cross country records as well as the US Hang Gliding National Championships, the US Paragliding National Championships, the World Hang Gliding Championships, and a Paragliding World Cup event.

For the 2015 XC Classic the primary launch will be Flynn's with Paiute as a back up.
Both sites are one the west side of the White mountains and face west.
Flynn's launch (37°23'16.70"N, 118°17'43.00"W) is east of the small town of Laws at an elevation of 5,700 ft asl (1,735 m).
The Piute launch ( 37°31'9.50"N, 118°17'40.00"W) is east of the town of Chalfant Valley at an elevation of 8,030 ft asl (2,448 m).
Flying in the Owens Valley is big. The terrain is high desert, with sparse vegetation and little water. With the valley floor at about 4,000 feet and potential climbs to 18,000 feet, this is decidedly high altitude flying and supplemental oxygen is strongly recommended. The valley wind can be strong, particularly in late afternoon. Thermals are usually strong and big and active flying is crucial. Landings are high altitude, desert affairs, with the potential for strong winds. Dust devils are common in the valley. Conditions moderate by September but still offer the potential for great cross country flying.
