Event info

The Dragon Hike and Fly is a hike and fly race to goal inspired by the idea of travelling across the stunning Bannau Brycheiniog by foot and paraglider. The Dragon Hike and Fly is suitable for hike and fly athletes with some hike and fly experience, it is not a coaching event.

Typically the event is 50 - 100km nominal distance around a predetermined route. We are in the process of applying for FAI CAT 2 classification for this event.

This year it will be hosted by SEWHGPGC Ltd at Glanusk Estate near Crickhowell. The event is running alongside the club's annual festival, the Magic Bash with a party and prize giving on the Saturday night.

We are very pleased to announce that this years task setter will be none other than the founder and organiser of all previous Dragon events, Alistair Andrews of Crickhowell Paragliding.

General rules

1. Travel is only permitted on foot or by paraglider within race times.
2. No other form of transport is allowed within race times.
3. Turn points can be tagged on foot or in the air and must be tagged in order.
4. Each pilot is responsible for their own route between waypoints and for all decisions to fly.
5. Pilots may have assistants, but they are not permitted to carry any of the equipment listed in the mandatory flying kit. All equipment must be carried at all times.
6. Do not deliberately fly in cloud to gain an advantage.

Flying equipment

All flying equipment must be homologated, airworthy, BHPA‑approved and comply with the latest editions of the following EN or LTF certification standards.
• Paraglider: EN 926‑2 and EN 926‑1, or LTF 91/09, with aspect ratio under 7.2
• Harness: EN 1651 with certified protection, or LTF 91/09
• Emergency parachute: EN 12491 or LTF 91/09
• Helmet: EN 966; snowboarding helmets certified to EN 1077 are also accepted
• CCC paragliders are not permitted

Tracking and responsibilities

All participants will be tracked and scored using GPS tracking devices. Participants should plan to have a backup GPS tracklog recorder and it is strongly recommended to use your one satellite based trackers.

The decision to participate, run, walk or fly, and how to manage risk on the hill and in the air, remains the sole responsibility of each competitor.

The task committee may adjust or update these rules at its discretion, and any changes will be communicated as early as possible to all registered participants.

Selection and entry fee

The entry fee is £90. This includes three nights camping at Glanusk Estate with use of toilets and showers, race entry, trackers and admission to the Magic Bash on the Saturday night.

We have a maximum of 80 places. This year there will be vetting, previous competitors of UK races will be accepted. All pilots must hold BHPA pilot rating, or international equivalent. Please confirm via the registration vetting poll.

You will be invited to pay once selected.

Requirements and safety

• BHPA membership cards or international equivalent (photos acceptable) must presented at registration before trackers will be issued.
• All competitors must answer the questions at the bottom of the registration about previous H&F, flying and mountaineering experience. Returning UK H&F competitors tell us which UK races you have done.
• All pilots need BHPA insurance or equivalent for international pilots. International pilots can be insured by the BHPA for £30 per day and we can help you out with this process.
