Event info
The X-Lakes Challenge is a hike and fly event, where you create your own adventure in the fells of the Lake District.
One Day Challenge format
The one day challenge is approximately an 8-hour event, run in parallel to the two day challenge. It's aimed to engage newcomers, and those that may not be in the ‘super fit’ category, to participate, enjoy the Lakes and to have some fun.
Timings will be confirmed by the race director during the Thursday evening briefing but competitors should plan to start from 08:00 Friday/Saturday and hike/fly until 16:00 on the same day. The start and finish location are defined but the route and flying choices are entirely the choice of the participant. The aim is to bag as many Wainwrights as possible before returning to the finish line before 16:00.
Wainwright scoring system.

General rules
1. Travel is only permitted by foot or by paraglider within the race times.
2. No other form of travel is permitted within race times.
3. Turn points can be tagged on foot or in the air.
4. The pilot is responsible for their route between turn points and decision to fly.
5. Pilots may have assistants but they are not permitted to carry any of the equipment listed below.
6. Do not deliberately fly in clouds to gain an advantage.
Flying equipment
All flying equipment must be homologated in an airworthy condition and be BHPA approved and comply with the latest edition of the following EN certification standards:
• Paraglider: EN 926-2 and 926-1 or LTF 91/09, having aspect ratio under 7,2.
• Harness: EN 1651 with certified protection, or LTF 91/09.
• Emergency parachute: EN 12491 or LTF 91/09.
• Helmet: EN 966 or snowboarding EN 1077 class is accepted.
• CCC Paragliders are not permitted.
Tracking and responsibilities
All participants will receive the Wainwright waypoints in advance and will be tracked and scored using GPS tracking devices. The decision to participate, run, walk or fly, and how to manage risk on the hill and in the air, remains the sole responsibility of each competitor.
At the discretion of the task committee, rules published in these pages may be adjusted/changed and will be notified as early as possible to all registered participants.
Selection and entry fee
XC competitors require a Pilot Rating: BHPA pilot rating or IPPI level 4 (by 18 June 2026). Confirm via the registration poll.
Entry limits
There are 30 places for those who register for the one-day event. Organisers reserve wildcard spots. Successful entrants make a charitable donation within 2 weeks or lose their place to the waiting list.
The X-Lakes hike and fly challenges are now officially Cumbria Soaring Club events and will again run alongside the LCC. They overlap with the LCC events so it is not possible to take part in both.

Prize fund and scoring categories
All entrants will carry live trackers. Scores will be updated on a live leaderboard throughout the day, with final results announced on Saturday evening, followed by the prize giving.
Main Prizes
The One Day Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the athlete with the highest overall score, based on the number of Wainwrights bagged and a verified return to the finish to sign the One Day Challenge board.
Prizes will also be awarded to the highest-scoring male and female competitors.
In the event of a tie, the winner will be the athlete with the most Wainwrights. If still tied, the first competitor to return to the showground and sign the board will take the win.
