Flying site

The dry Laguna de San Marcos, along with other tectonic depressions as Sayula, Atotonilco and Chapala (within the Transverse Volcanic Belt ) crosses the republic of Mexico along 880 km of the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico along the latitude 19N. Its highest point is the summit of Ciltaltépetl volcano with a height of 5636 m. The history of hang gliding in Mexico dates back to the early 70's with the Brothers Vico and Miguel Gutierrez in Mexico City. It was in 1977 that Vladimir "The Vladi" Muñoz and Jorge "El Coquis" Suárez who started this discipline in Jalisco, to be precise on a hill called Santa Maria - today it is located within the urban area of Guadalajara. At the same time they opened more takeoffs in the Sierra de Tapalpa. They arrived in San Marcos the 1979 opening a south-west take off with Rafael "El Choco" Sanchez halfway up the mountain. Then later they opened another behind the village and after flying at this hill for almost twenty years, alternating with new takeoffs in Tapalpa, which are 500 m higher tha the current launch of San Marcos.
The climate of the region results from the interaction of its continental position, the effect of the surrounding mountain barriers and general air traffic is under the control of subtropical high pressure. It is defined as semi-arid, with cool winters and hot summers, summer rains, presenting seven months of dry season.
