The main site for the Nationals is Mt Murchison. 360 degrees of take off, high mountain site, situated bang smack in the middle between the West and East Coasts. Easy landings right at the foot of the mountain and lots of good landings in the area we fly in.

Event info
The New Zealand Hang Gliding National Open Championship is an annual event to determine the New Zealand Champion. In recent years this has been held in Murchison as the weather and flying is so consistent in January / early February year on year.
Now that we are largely post covid and international travel is once again on the cards, we look forward to seeing our international friends coming to compete. Details for travel to New Zealand can be found at the following link: https://covid19.govt.nz/international-travel/
This competition is a not-for-profit Hang Gliding event organised for and on behalf of members of the NZ Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association and competition participants so as to promote the sport of Hang Gliding and to aid in the selection of New Zealand National champions to represent New Zealand at world class events. Any surplus funds from managing this event will contribute to our Hang Gliding worlds fund to support pilots attending the Hang Gliding worlds events. We appreciate all the people that volunteer their time to make a competition like this possible.
Selection and entry fee
Class 1
Class 1 - Sport
Class 5 - Rigid Wing.
No further selection requirements apply.
The main focus of the week will be to facilitate the Nationals Open Class for Intermediate and Advanced pilots. In conjunction with this we will also run a Sport Class for king-posted gliders. Novice pilots are welcome to attend and fly when conditions permit (and are within the parameters of their rating).
This year we would like people to pay competition fees prior to the event.
Please note the cancellation policy as well.
The fee will be charged as follows.
- The competition fee is $200 if fully paid before 31st of December 2022.
- The competition fee is $220 if paid after the 31st of December 2022.
This year satellite trackers will be mandatory. You may bring your own tracker. If you don't have a tracker you can rent one for $75 (we will try to get this fee down a bit but at the moment it sits at $75)
So your total fee for example would be $275 for entry plus sat tracker if you don't have your own.
The fee will be requested with payment instructions once your registration status has changed to 'waiting for payment'
The account details for competition fees, tracker and extra MURCH merch is:

International pilots must apply for a visiting pilots license at the NZHGPA website:

Accommodation: Riverside Holiday Park Murchison 0800 523 9591
19 Riverview Road 7077 PO Box 140 Murchison 7049 NZ www.riversidemurchison.co.nz . Go here to book your accommodation. This place is amazing! It's located right beside the Buller river. Camping sites can usually be booked on arrival but cabins should be booked in advance. If you want to make sure just book ahead of time. We can't speak highly enough of Riverside Holiday Park. It is extremely clean and just such good value for money, and so well positioned in terms of its proximity to the river, town, flying etc.
